The secret to effectiveness and success, based on the many books I read, is to develop good habits. Habits allow you to save mental energy, by make certain tasks automatic and second nature. Once you automate certain mental or physical tasks, then you are free to do other things with your energy reserve.
The secret to creating good habits is consistency in your actions. You wake up and do the same thing over and over again. At the outset, you will need to have discipline, which, frankly, takes a lot of mental energy. Developing consistency is the difficult part, but little by little it'll get easier once the habit takes hold. You will slowly feel things lighter, because you won't have to fight against your mind and body's resistance as much.
To develop consistency though, you must first make sure that the things you are doing are the "right" things—meaning, they will lead to your intended outcomes. Hence, you want a system, a set of behaviors to follow. James Altucher championed in his book Choose Yourself creating a set of tasks to do each day. Write a list of tasks to consistently do each day, creating familiarity to your day. Hold yourself accountable to these tasks. And repeat them everyday until they become second nature.
